Belize was formerly known as the British Honduras and remained a british colony until September 21st 1981. It is said that the word belize finds its origin in the Maya word “belix” meaning muddy water in reference to the Belize river. To the north of Belize we find Mexico, in the southwest we find Guatemala and finally the Caribbean Sea is east of Belize. The current population, approximately 320 000, is composed of several cultures, religions and ethnic group of different historical backgrounds. The main and only official language in Belize is english, Spanish and Kriol are widely spoken as well.
