Delaware : Geography, Population, language and culture
Delaware is the second-smallest state in the United States after Rhode Island. Delaware is one of the Middle Atlantic States of the United States. It is bordered by Maryland, and there is a short border with Pennsylvania, New Jersey can be found just across the Delaware Bay and Delaware River. Delaware is the sixth most densely populated state, with a population density of 442.6 people per square mile. This is 356.4 per square mile more than the national average. The ethnic distribution of the state is as follows; 72.5% white, 19.2% black, 4.8 hispanic, 2.1% asian, 0.3% native americans, 1.7% mixed race. English is the only official language. The five largest ancestries in Delaware are: African American (19.2%), Irish (16.6%), German (14.3%), English (12.1%), Italian (9.3%). Delaware had the highest proportion of African-American residents of any state north of Maryland, and had the largest percentage of free blacks (17% of the state's total population) prior to the Civil War. The Delaware company law is based on British Common Law with extensions by the U.S. Congress and the Delaware State Legislature. As in most of the united sates English is the official language of Delaware.
