Definition : Capital

The capital value of assets must be distinguished from the income earned by those assets. In relation to company law, the capital of a company belongs to the company not to shareholders, who own the shares (share capital). Capital is subject to the capital maintenance rule so that it may not generally be distributed to shareholders.
