Officially called the Hong Kong Special Administration Region, Hong Kong, is a territory of the People’s Republic of China. Surrounded by the South China Sea on the east, west and south and Guangdong to the north, Hong Kong benefits from a subtropical climate. Highest and lowest temperatures ever recorded are respectively 36.1 °C and 0 °C. With a population of about 7 million people on a surface of 1108 km2 Hong Kong is on the worlds most densely populated areas. Previously dependent of the United Kingdom until 1997, English has remained an official language in Hong Kong. 95% of the population is however of Chinese ethnicity and thus Cantonese is the first and main official language. Over 30% of the Hong Kong population uses English on an every day basis or as a second language. Hong Kong’s population practices a mix of local religions, most prominently Buddhism and Taoism. The influences from the west can be seen in the presence of modern facilities, buildings, technologies, and a general modern way of life. Yet Hong Kong attaches much importance to its traditional Chinese practices and beliefs
